ROSE HALL TOWN, CORENTYNE – The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints made it possible for some $4 million worth of items to be handed over to 36 schools in East Berbice last week. The recipients are the needy persons at these institutions.

In the first category on the receiving end were the Whim, Bush Lot, Manchester, Nurney, Belvedere, Williamsburg, Rose Hall Town, Port Mourant and Savannah Park Nursery Schools. For the higher level, there were the Eversham, Number Sixty-Three, Number Thirty-Six, Bohemia, Port Mourant, Rose Hall Town, Alness, Tain, Number Fifty-Six, Skeldon, Kildonan, McGowan, Auchlyne, Courtland and Sheet Anchor Primary Schools. Chandisingh Secondary Schools, as well as the New Amsterdam Multilateral School.

Also receiving the same items, along with bags of powered milk, were the Alpha Home at Gay Park, the Corentyne Based Rehabilitation Centre, Amerindian Hostel at Corriverton, Camal International Home for the Homeless at Albion, and the New Amsterdam Special Needs School.
Humanitarian Missionary Elder Charles Tanner of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints said that this type of service is rendered as often as necessary in several countries around the world. So far, 20 projects were done in Guyana this year. On September 9, the organization presented 200 wheel chairs to the Health Ministry.
According to him, the organization offers assistance through non-governmental and governmental organizations. The Church also assisted in offsetting the cost of transporting the items from Georgetown to Rose Hall Town.
Chief Executive Officer of the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club, Hilbert Foster, said that education is the foundation of success and, as such, his organization would continue to encourage youths to say no to drugs and yes to education. Over the last twelve years, the club invested millions of dollars into its Anti-drug and Pro-Education campaign. This initiative targets 60,000 young people in Regions Five and Six, where evening classes are held, as well as the annual August Vacation Camp. On a yearly basis, The Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club also awards scholarships, publishes a magazine, hosts an award ceremony, sponsors spelling bee competitions and other programmes.
Foster thanked the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, which he said is their biggest donor. “On behalf of all those who are receiving these items, I say a special thank you. I would like to especially express thanks to Elder and Sister Tanner, who have worked beyond the call of duty to make sure that the container was approved. We hope that the relationship with your Church would grow from strength to strength, and together we can continue to create miracles.”
According to Mr. Foster, during the 2007/2008 period, a total of $30 million worth of articles was donated. In 2007, $15 million worth of items touched the lives of 10,000 residents of Berbice.
Head Teacher Eunice Jones was one of the recipients to express gratitude. She was pleased to be on the receiving end, moreso since her institution is located in New Amsterdam.
Female Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club cricketer Nermala Sewdat was recognized for achieving passes in eleven subjects at this year’s Caribbean Examination Council’s examinations. She obtained three grade one passes in Agriculture and Integrated Science, grade two passes in Biology, Physics and Human and Social Biology, and five other subjects with grade three passes.
$1.5 million worth of items was also handed over to 15 cricket clubs across East and West Berbice. These are the Blairmont, Bermine, the West Berbice, Young Warriors, Police, Rose Hall Canje, Albion, Port Mourant, Chesney, Whim, Kildonan, Scottsburg, Skeldon, the Berbice River Association Cricket Clubs and the National Psychiatric Hospital. The Berbice Umpires Association got T-shirts.
Meanwhile, on September 19, the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club would be pulling off a Career Day and Youth Exhibition in the compound of the J.C. Chandisingh Secondary School.
According to Mr. Foster, several young people, though qualified, are without jobs.
Planning for the event commenced several months ago, and so far there are 50 agencies on board. These include government ministries, the Guyana Revenue Authority, the Guyana Defence Force, Prison and Fire Services, UNICEF, GINA, Guyana Forestry Commission, GGMC, Guyana Responsible Parenthood Association, Commonwealth Youth Programme, University of Guyana, Blood Bank and Banks DIH Limited. Organizations interested in participating can contact the club on 337-4562.
