A fine unbeaten century from opener Chandreka Ragnauth guided Belle Plaine to a 10 wicket victory over All Star in the final of the Demerara Distillers Limited 15 overs softball cricket competition at Belle Plaine, Wakenaam.
Set 173 for victory, Belle Plaine raced home in 12.4 overs without losing a wicket with Ragnauth who was later named man-of-the-match, leading the way with 112 which contained eight sixes and six fours. He was well supported by skipper Toolsie Sahadeo who was unbeaten on 60 (4×6, 5×4) when the umpire called time.
Earlier, All Star won the toss and elected to take first strike in front of a large and colourful crowd and made 172 for 7 off their allotted 15 overs. Openers Wazeer Mohamed (46) and Nazeer Mohamed (45) laid the foundation for a huge All Star total with a 1st wicket partnership of 80 in 8 overs.
After the latter was caught at the mid wicket boundry there was a steady procession to and from the pavilion with Wayne Osborne (36) being the only other batsman to show any resistance against the Belle Plaine bowlers.
Offspinner Macksood Khatweeb picked up 3 for 24 while Toolsie Sahadeo, the leading wicket taker in the competition with 25 wickets, took 2 – 30.
Belle Plaine carted off the winning trophy while All star collected the runner’s up prize. Ragnauth was the competition’s leading run getter with 588 runs.
At the presentation ceremony, representative of the sponsor Mr Anil Makeram, congratulated the two teams for reaching the final and said that the Demerara Distillers Limited is pleased to be associated with cricket in Wakenaam.
