Samantha Edwards, of “B” Field, South Sophia, is currently nursing serious burns on both her hands after she came into contact with high voltage electricity while trying to disconnect an illegal GPL connection at her home yesterday.
The incident occurred shortly after 11:00hrs, when the woman saw a GPL crew in the area. At the time, the crew was disconnecting all illegal connections in the Sophia area.
Kaieteur News understands that, upon seeing the GPL crew in front of her house, the woman took a pair of pliers that were not properly insulated and cut the wire from inside her home.
This sent electrical shocks through her body. Neighbours recalled hearing the woman screaming for help.
“I hear she hollering for, “Help! Help!” but I didn’t know is wuh de wrang wid she”, one neighbour said.
A woman in the community tried scaling the fence to render assistance, but by that time the GPL crew members had already cut the illegal wire from the post.
The crew rushed Edwards to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where she was treated for serious burns on both her hands.
Only two days ago, Edwards left the Georgetown Public Hospital after giving birth to a healthy baby. It was noted that she was home alone at the time of the incident.
Meanwhile, the Guyana Power and Light Company is currently conducting its campaign of clamping down on various communities that are stealing electricity.
Yesterday, GPL found more than 150 illegal connections in ‘A’ Field, Sophia, and a number of houses were also found to be illegally connected in “B” Field, Sophia.
Edwards’s home was the third house that was visited by the GPL crew, when the incident occurred.
In the past, GPL has always complained that the company is losing millions of dollars on an annual basis because of persons stealing electricity.
It was noted that Sophia is one of the communities that much focus will be placed on, since that area is known to have illegal connections.
The power company has also consistently warned people about the dangers of stealing electricity.
The crew members stated that at just about every two weeks they would return to the same houses and make further disconnections.
One of them said that by nightfall last night they expected all the houses to be reconnected, perhaps with the exception of Samantha Edwards’s home.
