– stronger presence of foreign players for future CBC teams
By Edison Jefford
The Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) will close this year on a high when it hosts the Antigua and Barbuda All-Star Business League late next month at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall to bring an end to what has been a busy year for the federation.
GABF President, Nigel Hinds, made the disclosure yesterday, following the federation’s General Meeting on Sunday. “Antigua All Stars Business League Team will be hosted by the GABF from November 26 to December 3, 2015,” Hinds confirmed.
He said that the Antiguan national team placed third at the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Championships this year. “The Antiguans will compete against GABF’s Mecca National Championships All Stars,” Hinds informed.
The GABF has also hosted Bermuda in March this year while the senior male team went to play Suriname before departing for the Caribbean Championships in Tortola. The national senior unit this year has not been short of international exposure.
However, admittedly, Hinds said that following Sunday’s meeting “the unanimous view of the federation was the need for a significant presence of foreign players to be included in teams for the CBC Championships going forward”.
He informed that the position on a stronger presence of foreign players was taken after reviews and discussions on the Male and Female Coaches, and Managers Reports from CBC 2015. The Guyanese male team placed 10th overall (last place) with predominantly local players.
In addition, other matters arising out of Sunday’s meeting included a Draft Financial Report for January -September 2015 that was circulated to the GABF Executive for review while work is in progress to have an extended School Basketball Games next month, which will span at least 12 schools across Guyana.
The federation approved Youth Basketball Guyana’s (YBG) Age-Group Tournament: Under-13, Under-15 and Under-17 as well as the Sixth Annual Titan Bowl for the top eight senior school teams in Guyana. The Age Group tournament is scheduled to start on October 16 and the Titan Bowl will be played during December 10-13.
The GABF also approved The Brusche’s Classic in Linden for October 22–November 2, 2015.
Hinds informed that the federation will offer to host the 2016 CBC Under-16 Championships in June/July once the federation gets the support of the Ministry of Education.
