Smythfield Rockers took some time to steady themselves before making a
gallant comeback to record a come from behind victory over arch rivals New Amsterdam Warriors 36-29 as play continued in the NPG packaging first division basketball competition for teams in Berbice.
New Amsterdam was off to a fast start as they led 16-6 by the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Warriors were showing signs of worn as Smythfield Rockers began staging a fight back to end the first half just two points behind, 20-18.
The third quarter was even as the two teams traded baskets to end things at 28 apiece. The fourth segment saw the battle weary Warriors being blown away as the Rockers poured in 12 points to their opponent’s one to complete the demolition 36-29.
Top scoring for Smythfield Rockers were Shemroy McKenzie with 10 and Tyrone Dey 8. For the Warriors, Theophilus Bess had 7. The competition continues on Sunday with Canje Knights playing their first game against Rose Hall Jammers at the Rose Hall Town Basketball Court, Area ‘H‘ Corentyne.
Seven teams are contesting the Vibert Garrett organised competition. The top two clubs from the two groups will move on to the semifinals, the two winners will contest the final in June at the Port Mourant Basketball Court.
The participating teams in Group A are Rose Hall Jammers of Corentyne, Hope Town Stealers of West Berbice and Canje Knights of East Canje. Group B is made up of New Amsterdam Warriors and Smythfield Rockers of New Amsterdam, Fyrish Black Sharks of Corentyne and Ithaca Hardliners of West Berbice. (Samuel Whyte)
