-attributes success to hard work, dedication and Graham
By Rawle Welch
Newly-crowned Caribbean Super bike champion Stephen ‘Valentino Rossi’ Vieira in an interview with Kaieteur Sport following the completion of the presentation ceremony to reward outstanding competitors in the GT&T / Seaboard Marine Caribbean Motor Racing Championship (CMRC) said the results and accolades he earned this year was a result of hard work, dedication and commitment to being the best in the Region.
Vieira, who swept the two legs in Jamaica and Barbados respectively, before faltering a bit in the final stanza on Sunday, said he had already accumulated enough points to win the title and even though he raced hard at home, the opposition had significantly improved.
The soft spoken daredevil of the track managed a first and two second places on Sunday and even though many other riders would have settled for such an outstanding performance, said he was a bit disappointed that he could not duplicate the flawless displays he produced in the two previous legs.
One of the pivotal players in the sudden resurgence of the Super bike category which had almost disappeared, Vieira had been very supportive of many young riders, encouraging them to take up the sport seriously, while he has also used his influence to persuade members of the corporate community to plug some of their financial support towards this aspect of the sport.
Always seen in the shadow of Canadian Kevin Graham for quite a few years now, Vieira said he has learnt a lot from Graham, who he referred to as a brother and someone who he will be forever grateful to.
“Kevin is never afraid or unwilling to share his vast knowledge of the sport he has performed at the highest level and knows quite a lot about racing Super bikes so I will always be appreciative of the support he has offered not only to me, but many of us here in Guyana.
Asked how he felt being the new champion, Vieira responded by saying he was very happy with his performance and winning the title, adding that he was glad to have accomplished something very significant in his career so far.
He extended thanks to Mr. Puri of Continental Agencies that sponsors him under the Sunburst Orange Juice product, Maurice Menezes, Horatio, Marcel Profitt and Keith Premdass, all of who helped in making him a champion.
