As Guyanese of African descent prepare to usher in Emancipation celebrations at the National Park, officials of the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) are gearing up for the Annual Emancipation Day Open Scrabble competition, scheduled to be contested a stone’s throw from the celebrations at the National Park.
The scrabble players will convene at the Malteenoes Sports Club Pavilion, Thomas lands, today to compete against each other in what is expected to be a tense battle of wits. Already, national champion, Abigail McDonald has signaled her intention to compete in the tournament and this could very well be an ominous sign for Moen Gafoor who has been carting off the lion’s share of the spoils of recent.
One suspects also, that former national champion, Fred Collins may very well return from a prolonged hiatus to attempt to disturb the status quo. Further, no one dare eliminate the females from the podium and names like Yvonne Murray, Grace Hercules and Ruby Cummings can attain the relevant form to propel them onto the podium.
The situation becomes a mite dicey when such names as Leroy Belony, Orlando Michael, James Krakowsky, Colin Chichester and Ewart Adams are thrown into the competitive mix.
It must also be remembered that all of the players are intensely engaged in practice sessions since the national championship is looming and each has his eyes on McDonald’s crown. Such an occurrence is indicative of the fierce yet friendly rivalry that is envisioned.
The action gets underway at 10:00hrs and players are asked to make every effort to be at the venue on time. Participants are also reminded that this is a rated competition and the tournament director would rigidly enforce the penalty for late comers. This group would have their clocks started in their absence. Entrance fee remains at $500.
