Fox and Yamada claim Men’s 55 Doubles crown
The Girl’s 18 Finals lived up to expectations as Shawna Gentle edged Aruna Ramrattan in a thrilling match at the Pegasus Courts on Thursday evening. Ramrattan almost pulled off a stunning comeback after loosing the first set 6-1 and trailing 4-1 in the second set as she evened the match with a 7-6 second set win.
Her comeback was however halted by Gentle who held her nerve in the super tiebreaker to win 10-3 and claim the title. The two can possibly have a rematch in the Ladies final if Ramrattan can upset number one seed Carol Humphrey in the ladies semi-finals today.
The Boy’s 18 was also a competitive affair as favourite Gavin Lewis was able to turn back the challenge of surprise finalist Seanden David-Longe who had upset the number two seed Daniel Lopes in the first round. Both players traded groundstrokes and were able to hold their serves before Lewis secured a break late in each set to pull away and secure the win.
Fourteen year old Daniel Lopes was able to redeem himself in the Men’s Singles as he upset his older opponent, Imo Fox, in a keen battle to win 7-5 6-3. Fox returning to competitive tennis had a good run in the tournament as he had earlier taken out top Junior Gavin Lewis in straight sets.
The top seeds in the Men’s singles also started off their campaigns in fine style as Jeremy Miller (1) got past Sandeep Chand in a match lasting close to two hours but ending with a 6-0 6-0 scoreline. Miller’s game was on song as he made several ridiculous saves and won all the keen points when pushed. Ezra Sue-Ho also advanced with a easy 6-0 3-0 (retired) win over his father Rawle.
In the Men’s Over 55 Final, Japanese Sakae Yamada teamed up with Maxie Fox to defeat Omar Persaud/Bobby Khan 6-3 6-3 as the pair capitalised on their opponents mistakes to take home the title. The game featured all the players having problems holding serve except Fox and this proved to be the difference in the match.
In the Men’s 35 singles category, Rudy Grant and Andre Lopes both booked places in the finals with hard fought wins over Gilbert Barckoy and Albert Madramootoo respectively. Grant was able to outlast Barckoy with his retrieving game and frustrated his opponent with his consistent play after Barckoy had taken the second set to even the match. Barckoy was leading 2-1 in the final set before his game fell apart and Grant took the set 6-3.
Lopes returning to Single’s competition will renew his rivalry with Grant as the two will face off for the title next week.
