– Sweet Romance wins co-feature
In-form jockey Yap Drepaul aboard Sweet Caramel thrilled the fans at Rising Sun Turf Club on Sunday when the duo captured the feature C& Lower Sprint Classic over 1100 metres for a first prize of $500,000 in the Jumbo Jet Auto Sales Meeting.
Eight animals took to the starting gates and it was Sweet Caramel who took to the front and opened up a sizeable lead even as the chasing pack that included big names such as Irish Gel, Miss Republic, Sequins and Jumbo Joy made desperate attempts to make up ground.
Known for its sprinting prowess Sweet Caramel did not disappoint even though it was coming off a lengthy lay-off as Drepaul guided his charge down the homestretch, holding on desperately to the lead, before crossing the line ahead of pre race favourites Miss Republic of the Elcock stables with Daniel Flores aboard and Irish Gel of the Singh stables with Kumar Singh in the saddle.
Jumbo Joy held on for the fourth spot.
In the co-feature for, Sweet Romance ridden by last year’s champion jockey Kumar Singh led from the starting gates to the finishing post in a most impressive display, hammering the opposition to come home by about four lengths.
He was followed home by Top of the Line with Prem Chandra astride, while Night Crescendo occupied third and Sea Rocket ended fourth.
It was the same story in the co-feature for three year old Guyana and West Indian bred three year-old horses.
Mr. Chris Jagdeo top horse Sweet Romance with Kumar Singh on the mount was able beat another star-studded line up in one of the most competitive events on the day’s card to sprint away with the Gary Kennard trophy and the $400,000 winner’s money.
It was Top of the Line of the Jumbo Jet stable that picked up the lead for most of the race in the nine-horse contest, a lead which it held until the home stretch, before Sweet Romance came roaring through on the rails.
Night Crescendo of the Crawford stable was finishing quickly, but a horse known to prefer the longer distances it was too little too late and had to be contented with the third spot just behind Top of the Line and ahead of Sea Rocket who sailed in fourth.
Another exciting race of the day was the Chattergoon sprint Classic two year old event. Turfites were eagerly awaiting the return clash between Zenyatta of The Jumbo jet stable and Jen’s Pride of the Rumour’s racing stable following the photo finish in the last event a week ago. However, like the previous outing, Zenyatta with Prem Chandra on the mount did what it does best, opening up like a shot from a gun and got away with a big lead at the start. This time the other horses decided to go after the leader early, lead by Jen’s Pride with top jockey Kumar Singh in the saddle and it was a flat out chase as Singh brought all his experience to the fore with the horses heading for home.
Zenyatta expertly hand ridden by Chandra saved enough down the stretch to hold off a game Jem’s Pride with Stormy Water and Peaceful finishing in third and fourth.
The F class event which had one of the most competitive line-ups was won by Laura Lee in Flight from the Jumbo Auto Sales which had a winning purse of $300,000 and the P&P Insurance brokers’ trophy ahead of World Class, Finishing Touch and Alphabet.
The upset game continued in the G&H class Melissa Chattergoon sprint Classic as Stylish Line, a recent import of The Kris Jagdeo Stables with Kumar Singh on its back was all style and fashion as it staved off a strong finish from Alphabet of the Elcock stable to gather up the $200,000 on offer. Sir Balajee and Finishing Touch lost some royalty as they finished third and fourth respectively.
Pixie Fire of The Customs stable with Jockey Yap Drepaul doing the honours made sure it was three wins for horses from that entity as it blazed away with the ‘I’ class Sham Sprint classic $150,000 top prize and the Junior Mohammed trophy.
Casino Royal, New World and Sun Raiser did not get to shine and settled for the lesser prizes.
Winning the ‘I’ 3 match-up with a $150,000 at stake and the Water Chris Hotel trophy was De Gump of the Ramkissoon stables. Sun raiser rolled in second ahead of Little Spike and Tiny Twenty-one.
The final race for the day which was for Division 1, 2 and 3 horses saw Madonna of the Saul stable coming out ahead of Blessed Child, Bounty Flyer and Silver Kid.
The win was worth $100,000 and the winners Circle trophy.
At the end of the day’s activities, Kumar Singh was adjudged the top jockey ahead of Yap Drepaul. Customs Racing Stable raced away with the top prize as trainer Tillack Dharry of the same organisation received the top trainer accolade compliments of Ramesh Sunich of Trophy Stall in Bourda Market.
The individual presentations were done by Francis Chichester, Amernauth Kirtipaul and Lalta Deokie of the Guyana Horse Racing Authority.
Over five million dollars in cash prizes and trophies were handed out with some 80 animals participating in the day’s event.
