The Guyana Hockey Board is set to launch the 2009 John Fernandes Insurance Services Ltd Second Division League tomorrow, at the GCC ground Bourda.
The league will feature players from all the top clubs in the country including Old Fort, Hikers and GCC along with defending champions Western Dragons of Uitvlugt and veteran challengers Carib Degenerates.
This year for the first time in its history, the tournament will feature ladies as the women’s national squad will also take this opportunity to garner much needed tournament practice before their upcoming international tournament in Jamaica.
While Deon Carew, Andy Sampson and the rest of the Uitvlugt-based team along with Old Fort, which will comprise the likes of John Abrahams and Jason Dos Santos, should enter as favourites to cop the trophy, they can expect strong challenges from a talented GCC contingent that contain young speedster and squash ace Raphael DeGroot, Stuart Gonsalves and the Xavier brothers, Andrew, Chris, Phillip and Stephen.
The well-rehearsed Hikers team who are gearing up for junior competition in Trinidad over the Easter Weekend should be the team in form with young phenom and national under-21 Shaquille Assanah at the helm supported by Ryan Primo and Andrew Stewart.
The Carib Degenerates round out the male teams with a contingent of seasoned campaigners who on a good day are capable of defeating any team in the competition.
Though recently reassembled, the national ladies will be worthy opponents for any of the male teams and are certainly expected to improve as the tournament progresses.
National Captain Maria Munroe is expected to once again marshal the midfield for the ladies in a team that is likely to see some new faces in the form of junior stalwarts Dominique DeGroot, Vashema Bourne and the Fiedtkou sisters Marzena and Thalia.
The GCC men will face off against the Carib Degenerates in the opening match at 17:00 hrs.
