Kaieteur News – Over the last few days, reports of bandits luring sellers on the Facebook Marketplace to be robbed, have surfaced across various social media platforms. The bandits, according to the reports, would lure the Facebook sellers to a location by posing as genuine customers and then rob them of their products.
At least four victims have reportedly made posts recounting how they fell into the bandits’ traps. Three of the individuals were robbed of smart phones while the fourth was robbed a motorcycle.
On Sunday evening, a Venezuelan national, Rafael Guerra was reportedly lured to the Stabroek Market by a fake customer and robbed of a Samsung Galaxy S23 –ultra he had posted-up for sale on the Facebook Marketplace.
The thief had made contact with him via Facebook with the use of a fake account and expressed his interest in purchasing the smart phone from Guerra.
Arrangements were reportedly made and the phone thief showed-up at the man’s residence to make the purchase. The suspect managed to convince Guerra that he wanted the phone for his wife and that she would like to check it first before making the purchase.
Guerra joined the man in a taxi and went with him to Stabroek Market, Central Georgetown. When they arrived, the man asked for the phone. Trusting the fake customer, Guerra reportedly took out the phone and the man grabbed it, exited the car and sprinted away.
Another man claimed that he was robbed of an iPhone 12 pro max on Saturday. That individual alleged that someone contacted him on the Facebook Marketplace and requested to purchase the phone.
He made arrangements to deliver the item in South Ruimveldt. When he arrived there, the potential buyer asked to inspect the item before handing over the cash and he agreed. The fake customer inspected the phone for a few seconds before running and escaping in some nearby bushes.
A third victim was robbed of an iPhone 14 pro Max at the John Fernandes Terminal on Mandela Avenue. The bandit contacted him to buy the phone and he (the victim) agreed to conduct business at the terminal.
When he got there, the suspect entered the seller’s car, snatched the phone and ran way. The thief was reportedly captured on camera fleeing with the man’s phone.
Like the men who lost their phones to fake customers, another individual was recently lured to Smyth Street, Georgetown where gunmen robbed him of a motorcycle he had posted up for sale on the Facebook Marketplace.
According to him, an individual had contacted him with interest of purchasing the motorcycle. The victim was told to meet the interested buyers near the Revenue Licence Office on Smyth Street. The victim agreed and upon his arrival, two men attacked and robbed him of his motorcycle.
