“Young Entrepreneurs help to create new value in the economy and they also play a big part in the development of technology.”
By Allyiah Allicock
Kaieteur News – Growing up, Falisha Mohamed was always the artistic one in her family. These were skills she never allowed to fade or diminish. And now, she is the proud owner of her own arts and craft business, which was launched in May 2018.
In a recent exclusive interview with this magazine, Mohamed said what led her to start this venture was not only wanting to showcase her creative skills to the public, but to also show her daughters that a woman’s place is not only in the kitchen, but that women are capable of doing other things that are remarkable and exceptional.
“Growing up, I always wanted to be independent and now that I’m a mother, I want my girls to see that a woman’s place isn’t just in the kitchen. A woman can do it all, be mother, a wife and still run a business,” she explained.
Mohamed said through her work, her craft is one way she expresses herself. “I enjoy expressing my creativity which gives me a feeling of achievement which elevates my self-esteem and I’m proud to exhibit these crafts,” she added.
Having developed her creative skills over the years, she related that her business offers a variety of different craft items such as paper flowers, selfie frames, handmade party bags, piñatas, personalize cards, scrunchies, bows, Canvas frame, personalized gift boxes just to name a few.
The young businesswoman said although her customer base remains small, she is most grateful; and with the support from her friends and family, it has been a blessing.
Having started this venture back in 2018, Mohamed shared that one of the main challenges she encountered was sourcing materials. “I would usually take one day to find all my materials because they aren’t found in one place. To avoid all the hassle, I would purchase my materials months before for my monthly craft ideas,” she mentioned.
Though this has been a challenge, it never really prevented her from fulfilling her orders.
As it relates to the pandemic which struck the country back in 2020, Mohamed revealed that during that period it almost made her quit her craft because it was difficult to get out to purchase materials and a lot of people were doing their own craft from home and that her craft was mainly for party supplies at the time.
One of the things she said that helped her through that rough phase was her husband. According to her, he has been her biggest support and has always encouraged her even when she wanted to give up.
Now with the pandemic being under control, her business has been thriving in its own way.
The mother of two said to this magazine that moving forward one of her long-term goals is to expand into a full-time craft store. This way, persons would be able to shop in a more spacious environment.
With a lot yet to come for this small business in the future, our featured entrepreneur is of the view that young entrepreneurs add new value to our economy. “Young Entrepreneurs help to create new value in the economy and they also play a big part in the development of technology,” she said.
When asked what she thinks can be done locally to boost small businesses, she mentioned that free advertising can assist, with the authorities directing more support to these businesses.
She added too that the hosting of more small businesses expos can help boost them in a big way.
