Kaieteur News – Banks DIH Limited has supported the Georgetown Softball Cricket League Inc. (GSCL) President’s T20 tournament which bowls off today at several venues in and around Georgetown. At a simple presentation ceremony held recently at Thirst Park, Banks Beer Executive Brian Choo-Hen presented a cheque to President of GSCL Inc. Ian John.
Also present at the simple ceremony was Outdoor Events Manager Mortimer Stewart who said they are happy to be given a chance to be part of the tournament and wished the teams well. He pledged their continued support while John welcomed the partnership and stated that they are looking forward to their continued support.
The three-day tournament, which is organised jointly by the Honourable Counsel of Guyana to Florida, Ramzan Roshanalli and the GSCL was launched on Sunday February 7 at the Everest Cricket Club Banquet Hall with Guyana’s President His Excellency Dr. Irfaan Ali delivering the feature address and officially committing to the mega tournament.
The inaugural tournament will be played in three categories; Open (All ages), Masters (Over-40) and Legends (Over-50. Local powerhouses Regal All Stars and Speedboat are favourites to take the open title. Both teams have been dominant in recent times with Speedboat taking the honours the last time they faced each other which was in the final of the Prime Minister’s T20 Cup late last year.
Regal All Stars will look to go all the way this time around and will be wary of Speedboat’s all-round strength with the likes of Ameer Yusuf, Kishore Smith, Wazeer Hussain, Shazim Hussain, Lennox Marks and Peter Alleyne.
Regal All Stars have a balanced unit which includes Fazal Rafiek, Diyanan Ramnauth, Karamchand Persaud, Delroy Perreira, Patrick Rooplall and Chien Gittens. Among other teams in this category are Hill Foot, Ariel and Essequibo Wild Oats.
The Masters category includes Fisherman, Regal, Wellman, HS Masters, Success and Trophy Stall. Fisherman won this division in the Prime Minister’s Cup in 2020 having beat Wellman in the final.
Regal Legends will look to continue their winnings ways in the Over-50 division and will face challenges from Wellman, President’s XI, Rockaway, Enterprise and Floodlights. Teams will battle for a first place prize of $500,000 in each category, while the runners-up will collect $100,000. The tournament will conclude on Sunday at the Everest CC.
