Guyanese boxers will commence their trek to the 2016 Brazil Olympiad tonight when light/heavyweight pugilist, Desmond Amsterdam, squares off with Columbia, Carroll Juan Carlos, in the Olympic Qualifiers at around 14:00hrs today at the Predio Ferial la Rural de Palermo, Buenos Aires, Argentina.
This much was revealed when Kaieteur Sport spoke with coach, Sebert Blake moments after the draw had concluded. Middleweight champion, Dennis Thomas is also representing Guyana and is scheduled to match gloves with Puerto Rican, Jose Rodriguez tomorrow evening. The Guyanese entourage left the country two days ago for their final destination and was afforded little time to become acclimatized after arriving in the host country a mere twenty four hours before fight time.
228 boxers from 33 countries are competing in the critical Americas Olympic Qualifier event and Guyana’s two representatives are hoping to win their bouts and move into the next round in order to retain their chances of qualifying for Brazil.
This is the first time that women will be competing as this is the first time an Olympic qualifying event will include the women’s competition. The Americas Olympic Qualifier is the first of three qualifying opportunities for the men and two for the ladies. The top four boxers in the Women’s World Championships in May will also advance to the 2016 Olympic Games.
On the men’s side, there’s another perk for those who competed in AIBA’s World Series of Boxing and APB (AIBA Pro Boxing) bouts over the last two years. These boxers receive a second opportunity to qualify. That final event will take place in late June. Blake said that he has advised his boxers to take full advantage of this opportunity since acquiring the requisite funds for that trip had been a trying task and it would be difficult to procure funding for another tournament.
THEM PIMPING OUT GUYANA.
