Former Police Sergeant Colin Bailey was yesterday, remanded to prison for the 2013 murder of his reputed
wife, Sirmattie Ramnaress, after an appearance before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
It is alleged that Bailey, 52, of Lot 63 South Vryheid’s Lust, East Coast Demerara killed the woman between August 30 and August 31, 2013 at Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara.
According to reports, the body of 36 year-old Ramnaress was found lying face down in the garage of her home on August 31, 2013. It was a blaze coming from the woman’s home that led firefighters to a bond, when they stumbled upon her body. Her body reportedly bore two stab wounds- one to the neck and another to the hip.
The police, in a statement had said that Ramnaress’ house was ransacked and drenched with a flammable liquid, and a storage bond at the rear of the building was destroyed by fire.
Bailey was not required to plead to the indictable charge and was remanded to prison until March 15.
Police Prosecutor, Inspector Neville Jeffers, said that the police file is still incomplete since another person is being investigated in relation to the crime.
The ex-Sergeant had always claimed that he had no involvement in the woman’s death when he was being viewed as a suspect. But police had later suggested that Bailey was no longer a suspect. Bailey had told Kaieteur News, “I had a feeling all the time because I knew I was not part of it. I knew some time it would have come to light.”
Last year, the dead woman’s neighbour, Colin Grant, of Lot 1161 Diamond Housing Scheme, EBD was
charged with her murder. Bailey was arrested following the arrest of another suspect in custody. The suspect had reportedly told police that he was hired and paid by Bailey to kill the woman.
Bailey was dismissed from the Guyana Police Force (GPF) last year, following corruption accusations against him. He and another Police Officer were placed before the courts for allegedly accepting bribes in order to dissolve a criminal matter. They are accused of obtaining $300,000 as inducement from Kissoondat Preimsook, a licenced firearm holder, for his release.
It was further alleged that Bailey fraudulently obtained the sum of $50,000 from Preimsook as an inducement to not institute charges against him. The incidents allegedly occurred on May 7 and June 15, 2015, respectively.
They were both ordered to post $100,000 bail and lodge their passports.
