The Ministry of Housing and Water is upgrading several community roads, the sideline
footpath in No.64 Village and several access roads in Miss Phoebe, Grassfield and Ankerville, Region Six to the tune of $155.7M. The projects are on schedule for completion.
Last June, the Ministry through its Community Roads Improvement Programme (CRIP), signed the contracts with K.P Jagdeo General Contractor and H. Nauth and Sons for the upgrade of roads in Region Six. The project durations are four months each.
According to Tejwattie Roopchand, CRIP’s Project Engineer, in Lot 1, Middle Walk, First Street, Second Street, Third Street and the Sideline Footpath were deplorable and needed urgent upgrade to meet the needs of residents.
The situation was the same with several access roads in Miss Phoebe, the internal roads network at Grassfield and Dispensary Street, Ankerville. Indeed, in some of these areas residents had to ply mud dams to get about their daily activities, she added.
The Project Engineer said that the main access roads were upgraded from a Double Bitumen Surface Treatment to asphaltic concrete surface while the primary accesses were upgraded from either crusher-run surface or mud to that of Double Bitumen Surface Treatment. Safety features such as road signs, markings and speed humps have also been included.
Works are scheduled to be completed on time and within budget.
Roopchand said that these infrastructure projects will improve the lives of residents by providing better access to health care, schools, community centres and markets. The economy of the communities will advance with improved level of efficiency in the delivery of goods and services, and improved access to business and places of trade.
Another positive of having such developments in communities is motivation for residents to pay their taxes to Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) which will in turn allow these NDCs to better serve the communities.
