– Five suspects in custody
Police have arrested five persons following the recovery of a white Toyota Spacio car that was hijacked by three men on Sunday night at Cross Street, Alexander Village, Georgetown.
In a statement, the police said that diligent investigations led to the recovery of the stolen motor vehicle on Monday at a residence in Sunflower Avenue, South Ruimveldt.
The vehicle bearing registration number PRR 4395 was stolen sometime around 05:00 hrs in front of Guytrac after three men dragged the owner, Ramanand Jagdeo out of it.
The vehicle had in excess of $1.2M in goods and $300,000 in cash. These were not recovered.
The men had reportedly trailed Jagdeo from Peter’s Hall, East Bank Demerara (EBD) and caught up with him on Cross Street, where he had stopped to talk to a friend. The men approached Jagdeo and pulled him out of his car.
The Diamond, EBD businessman had told Kaieteur News that he was going into Alexander Village to pick up a worker, and had stopped on the Public Road at Peter’s Hall to call out to a friend, when a car drove past him and stopped a short distance away.
“A man come out and walk towards me and asked if everything okay and I said ‘yes.’ Then another guy came out from the car and ask the same thing, and I suspect they up to something, so I tried to act brave and jumped out the vehicle and started calling hard for my friend, who then come outside and the men leave,” the businessman said.
He explained that while talking to his friend, the men drove north and waited for several minutes at the traffic light near the Demerara Harbour Bridge.
The businessman added that when he realized that the men had left, he drove off.
“My right side rear view mirror broke and I couldn’t really see at the back of the car because I had goods pack up high. When I reached Guytrac, I see my friend, so I stopped to say ‘hi,’ but I notice he didn’t say anything and less than a second after, two men come and pull me out the vehicle and they drive away (with the vehicle),” Jagdeo reported.
The hijackers were positively identified by police officers who viewed a business entity’s surveillance camera which recorded how the men dragged Jagdeo out of the vehicle before escaping.
