The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), in a statement on Monday last sought to clear the air on an article published in the Kaieteur News on Tuesday April 22, 2014 and headlined ‘Policeman loses limb… Mother demands justice from GPHC’.
The Hospital indicated that “Mr. Samuel Elvis was brought to the Georgetown Public Hospital on Thursday 20th March 2014 after he had sustained a gunshot wound to his lower right thigh.
An ultrasound revealed there was no flow of blood to his right leg and an X-ray confirmed that a bullet was lodged at the back of the lower thigh, behind the knee. The blood vessels were damaged by the bullet.
Doctors on duty explained to the patient that his condition required surgery. He was advised that, depending on the extent of the damage to the major blood vessel, there was the possibility of amputation.
Surgery lasted approximately 90 minutes. The severely damaged blood vessel was repaired but the extent of the injury did not allow a sufficient flow of blood to sustain life to his toes and foot.
Management of his condition continued on a daily basis and, following post-operation evaluation and ultra-sound, the patient was advised of the need to go ahead with the amputation.
He subsequently took his own discharge to seek other advice and options.”
The Hospital stated that it “would welcome the opportunity to (if possible) comment on these complaints in an effort to give balance to the news reports”.
“GPHC closes ‘the curtain of charity’ on the statements allegedly made by Health Professionals at the Private Institution,” the statement concluded.
