– Barbados dethrones Guyana for the Country title
Defending champion David Summerbell Jnr. called it an unbelievable disappointment, while new champion Barbadian Roger Mayers said it was certainly not what they had planned, but in the end it worked in their favour as he went on to dominate the final leg of the GT&T / Seaboard Marine Caribbean Motor Racing Championship which culminated yesterday, at the South Dakota Circuit.
The new champion was simply unstoppable as he destroyed all the opposition to capture all three races in the CMRC Series, while Canadian Kevin Graham, Stephen Vieira and Carlos Rodrigues shared the spoils in the Super Bike category, finishing with a win apiece.
Watched by a crowd that must be the largest to witness motor racing in decades, they were entertained be the sheer daredevilry of the drivers and riders, who put their skills on display as they challenged each other for individual and country supremacy.
Mayers, driving a Ford Focus and sitting on pole throughout the day was never challenged as he blitzed the field that included Guyana’s Mark Vieira, Andrew King and Kevin Jeffrey, while Jamaica’s Summerbell had a torrid day, recording three DNF in all three races in the Series, thereby handing the Barbadian the title easily.
Mayers speaking with Kaieteur Sport shortly after the completion of the day’s proceedings said it was totally not what he had anticipated, but welcomed the title, adding that he performed beyond expectation.
He, however, conceded that it was made a bit easier with the retirement of Summerbell, while the new surface aided his performance, citing the last time he was here and suffered tyre problems due to the formerly abrasive nature of the surface.
Summerbell for his part said it was hugely disappointing for him and the team, but stated that it was the nature of the sport.
He pointed out that they were confident that they could successfully defend the title, but due to mechanical failure could not do so.
Summerbell, however, felt that due to the close planning of the three Meets, it is becoming increasing difficult for the teams to get the machines ready in time for the next Meet.
According to him, it is something that the Committee should review and come up with a new timetable that will allow competitors enough time to prepare their machines to the optimum.
The full details will come in a subsequent issue.
