Two men, Calvin Gulliver and Lloyd Daniels, appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday to face charges of malicious wounding and assault respectively. Gulliver is the owner of a car used as a taxi, driven by Daniels.
At the hearing, before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, it was alleged that on October 23, last, at Campbell Street, Albouystown, Gulliver unlawfully and maliciously wounded Daniels, while Daniels assaulted Gulliver.
According to the facts of the prosecution, Daniels returned the car which is used for taxi purposes, and the owner, Gulliver, noticed that a signaling device on the car was missing. This was identified as a trafficator. Gulliver inquired about the missing device but was not pleased about the answer he received.
The court further heard that Gulliver chucked Daniels, who in turn dealt Gulliver a cuff to the face. The duo, according to the prosecutor, subsequently got into a scuffle where they fell to the ground. The men later armed themselves – Daniels with a bottle and Gulliver with a knife that he had allegedly received from his brother.
It was further alleged that Daniels received serious injuries, including stab wounds, while it was stated that Gulliver was assaulted. The matter was later related to ranks of the police station and both men were detained as a result
Gulliver appeared in court with his attorney who told the court that his client had inquired about the missing trafficator. Daniels had later brought to the car owner another trafficator where a number appeared to have been scraped off. Gulliver refused to accept that item, the lawyer told the court.
A medical certificate was presented to the court by Daniels. The two men were later granted bail, with Gulliver ordered to sign a bond to keep the peace, pending the conclusion of the matter.
Gulliver was granted bail to the tune of $50,000 on the indictable offence, while Daniels was given bail of $25,000 on the assault charge.
