Although residents of Sophia in July saw the commissioning of a Water Treatment Plant, most persons are still fetching water from trenches and broken pipelines.
Residents now say that they are yet to see the benefit of such a water plant which was supposed to enhance water supplies.
The Sophia Water Treatment Plant was to provide 30,000 residents with improved water service.
GWI had stated that the new Sophia Water Treatment Plant is a state-of-the-art facility which comprises a modern energy efficient gravity type water treatment technology. The plant utilizes a sodium hypochlorite generation system which aids in the chlorine purification process.
However, according to most residents of Sophia, there has been “hell” in acquiring potable water and people still depend on the trenches for water and the rain.
Many households for some period of time are not accessing water, and people resorted to breaking some water lines and this has proven to be costly for GWI since a lot of money had to be spent to conduct necessary repairs, not forgetting there was a high wastage of flowing water.
Residents in Sophia are calling on the Minister of Water, Irfaan Alli to intervene and find a solution to the water woes facing the community.
According to Public Relations Officer of GWI, Timothy Austin, the new Water Treatment Plant in Sophia caters for ‘A to C’ Field, Sophia, Prashad Nagar and parts of Bel Air. However, he acknowledged that reports were made to GWI pertaining to some residents not receiving water.
Austin said that the water company is trying to get the Cummings Lodge well up and running to assist with the situation faced by some residents.
