Delroy Deane in the 32nd minute, Telson McKinnon 45th, Desford Williams in the 57th and Travis Hilliman in the 61st combined to secure a hard fought 4-1 victory for the Guyana Defense Force (GDF) against Milerock FC in the second semi final of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Super Four competition played at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) Ground on Sunday evening last.
Ryan Crandon narrowed the score by a fraction with a 65th minute success but the effort proved inconsequential.
The Army will now oppose Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United on Thursday to determine the winner of the championships at the same venue while Milerock will oppose Rosignol in the third place playoff.
Thursday’s action promises to be enthralling and ‘The Hammers’ would want to clinch this championship to add to a plethora of local achievements while the GDF will feel that this is the perfect time to push for a victory especially since the former team’s level of play has been somewhat mercurial.
Alpha has suffered a 2-0 defeat to Conquerors in the just concluded Mayor’s Cup championship which was preceded by a drawn decision in their CFU match against Puerto Rico club team, River Plate.
Despite clinching a 3-2 victory in the return match, Alpha was guilty of shoddy play with players like Shawn Bishop, Dwight Peters and even Anthony ‘Awo’ Abrams blundering in the attacking third.
These blunders had disgusted their coach, Wayne Dover who had promised to return to the drawing board and come up with sound strategies to minimize such tardiness.
That the shabby play continued even after Dover’s pronouncement, may just provide the Army with the type of assurance needed to propel them to the championship prize.
Meanwhile, in their match against Milerock, the soldiers played a compact game and their unified approach was a joy to behold. The attacking foursome of Deane, McKinnon, Williams and Hilliman has demonstrated what could be achieved through unity.
Their selfless ball distribution propensity was basically responsible for the 4-1 achievement last Sunday evening. Should they adopt a similar approach and requisite deportment, Alpha could very well end up with another loss.
Naturally, this is all speculation but with the way the two teams have reached their present positions in the tournament, one could only speculate on a winner. What is certain is that whichever way the victory goes, fans are sure to be entertained by at least ninety solid minutes of top football.
