In recent days a flyer has been circulating accusing this newspaper of being associated with the main opposition. At the same time, fingers are being pointed at the Stabroek News alleging that that newspaper, in an editorial, endorsed the presidential candidate of the PNCR.
The latter accusation has been openly made within the letter pages of daily newspapers but the flyer seeking to discredit this newspaper has been circulating within the traditional strongholds of the ruling party.
Kaieteur News knows where this is coming from and what is behind this campaign. Kaieteur News understands that the revelations that are appearing almost daily in this newspaper about deals, contracts, wastage and extravagance in public office are causing those in power to be more nervy than Colonel Gadaffi in Libya.
They are worried about the exposure of what they are doing and so they are attempting to discredit this newspaper because they are unable to deal with the fallout from these revelations.
Kaieteur News had long been informed that at a meeting of the powerful it was said that a strategy had to be devised to deal with this newspaper. That strategy has been unfolding over the past years and has involved attempts to stifle the finances of this newspaper.
Kaieteur News, however, was ready for those who wanted to deal with it. As such it sought to reduce its dependence on certain ads by asking the Guyanese people to pay $20 more per edition. This move caught the conspirators by surprise because they had anticipated that the sales of Kaieteur News would have dropped, allowing the newspaper that they support to gain an advantage.
The people of Guyana, however, have rallied around this newspaper because they understand the value and importance that its serves. So popular is Kaieteur News that one youngster sang a song about it during the junior calypso competition and won the event.
In his composition he sang that “Kaieteur News is the best; it is better than all the rest. Even when it tells a lie, people running to buy.”
The rush to buy the Kaieteur News is sending shivers down the spines of those who know that their actions are being scrutinzed. They are running scared as the newspaper continues to expose a great deal of wrongdoing within the government, especially in relation to the award of contracts and the disposal of state assets.
They therefore have decided that in this election season, the best way to hurt this newspaper is to associate it with the main opposition in order that this would peeve the supporters of the ruling party and thereby force many of them to stop buying the newspaper. By not buying the newspaper, they would therefore not be able to read about the wrong things that their government is doing with the peoples taxes.
The people of Guyana however are not that silly. They are not going to be impressed by any flyer being distributed. They know what is behind that flyer and they will continue to support the Kaieteur News for as the words of the song goes,
“Kaieteur News is the best; it is better than all the rest.”
The agents behind the circulation of the flyer are certainly not going to deter Glenn Lall from exposing wrong doing in Guyana. Glenn Lall is one individual who is not going to be discouraged by any smear campaign.
He is also not going to go around the Caribbean bawling like a cry-a-baby. There is no way that what is happening today in rural communities will cause him to lose any sleep. He has said it on more than one occasion that he expects that those who desire to see his newspaper close down will stop at nothing.
He knows why they want to see the Kaieteur News go out of business and he knows that it also has to do with promoting another newspaper.
He is not known to bow to the pressure. He always said that in life if you cannot stand up for something, you are going to fall for anything. Glenn :Lall and Kaieteur News are not going to fall. He is leaving that for Gadaffi.
Glenn Lall is not bothered by the attempt to link his newspaper to the main opposition. He has confidence that the people of Guyana will see through this ploy and understand clearly that those behind this smear campaign want to pull wool over their eyes.
And all for the purpose of continuing to treat this country as if it is their private estate.
