Local chess players that excelled in the qualifying rounds in the Guyana/FIDE International Rating Tournament organized by the Guyana Chess Federation earlier this year, are scheduled to be in action once again when their four challengers from overseas arrive here for that round robin tournament slated for the National Stadium, Providence starting on Tuesday July 1 next.
The four overseas players, Karl Rapon (2024) of Martinique, Surinamese, Romario Sanches (1972), Barbadian Michael Barker (1729) and Trinidadian Hayden Lee (1856) will pit their skills against local players Shiv Nandalall, Taffin Khan, Ronuel Greenidge, David Khan, Loris Nathoo and Ryan Singh in a single Round Robin tournament that culminates on July 5 next.
Should any of the six local players meet the specified level of performance in the FIDE sanctioned tournament, they can obtain lucrative ratings. Furthermore, local players securing points from the current group contesting in the imminent FIDE championships can also obtain international ratings. The players would contest two rounds on each playing day. Meanwhile, the players paid a courtesy call on Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Frank Anthony in the boardroom of the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports yesterday morning. At that function Mr. Anthony handed over 20 electronic clocks to Tournament Director of the Chess Federation, Irshad Mohamed. The clocks were donated by FIDE in collaboration with manufacturers, Digital Game Technology (DGT) of Holland and would be used for the impending tournament as well as future competitions.
Delivering brief remarks shortly after handing over the gift to chess officials, Minister Anthony urged the players to give of their best at the tournament. He noted that the executives rose from a mere steering committee to their present status as a constitutionally elected body headed by Mr. Errol Tiwari. He also noted the huge strides made by the local Federation and their achievement of reinstatement into the international body, FIDE. “This marks the beginning of a new era in chess,” said Mr. Anthony.
The tournament is sponsored by GT&T, Hand in Hand Insurance Company Ltd, New GPC Inc, Swiss House Cambio and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport.
