Pamela Dillon, of Simpli Royal Production, in a rebuttal to a review “Plastic not-so-fantastic” by Neil Marks which was based on the Miss Guyana Earth 2010, has stated she should have had an opportunity to comment before the article was published in the May 14 issue of Kaieteur News.
She said that it appeared that the reporter was partial.
According to Ms Dillon, a reporter should be neutral. Marks did not mention anything positive of the event, she said. His comments appeared to be personal, she added.
She said that the green plastic bags worn by the models are bio-degradable. Every element in the show has its advantages and disadvantages. The aim of the pageant is to start a recycling awareness programme which would be the first phase.
Dillon explained the queen will not only be an ambassador for the Miss Earth Foundation. She will promote various tourist destinations. In addition, a video tape will be submitted to show the works that will be done by the queen.
“The people who gave me this franchise that I have been working on for two years, when they go on line to check the progress, this is what they are butting up with. ‘Well what is Guyana doing?’ they will ask?
“How can he mention plastic bags when they are coded green, blue, and are transparent which means that they are bio-degradable?” said Pamela Dillon.
According to Dillon, the pageant was reported in a bad light and that this was unjust since Guyana is championing the conservation path.
She said that the poem she had recited at the event clearly speaks of Guyana in all its glory. “It talks about our rivers and waterways, gold and diamond, our citrus, oil, bauxite, our trees; it talks about everything.”
But this was reported in a negative light which was unwarranted.
Pamela Dillon further noted that the investment is a $10M one and with negative publicity it will detract investors from a positive and rewarding investment in the Pageant.
The Miss Guyana Earth launching was held at Princess Hotel Wednesday evening. The pageant aims to promote the preservation of the environment and the protection of the Earth.
Every year, between 80 and 90 candidates from around the world compete on beauty and knowledge of environmental issues.
