It’s no secret that Adrian Dutchin, the nation’s lone three-time Soca monarch is a member of the KKR Head Hunters group and while he has opted to not compete in 2010 Mashramani competitions for yet another year, his fellow group members are not standing down.
In an exclusive interview, Melissa ‘Vanilla’ Roberts, the reigning Mash Road March Queen; Wilbur ‘B52’ Levans; and Orlando ‘Bones Roots’ Johashen, have all confirmed that they are individually taking aim at three top spots of the Soca Monarch and Road March titles while budding singer Tennesia Defreitas is taking aim at the Junior Calypso and the Mash HIV Song competition crowns. Her songs are ‘don’t want to be born’ and ‘wrap it up’. She placed third last year when she sang ‘texting.’
Their campaign opens today (Saturday) in Linden where the Carib Soca Monarch semi final is carded to take place and at the National Cultural Centre where the final of the Junior Calypso Monarch is slated to be staged.
For both the road march and the Soca monarch, Vanilla will be focussed on getting ‘High’ while B52 will be ‘Carrying On’ and Bones
will be focussed on driving home the message ‘Is We Own’.
B52, formerly called Lil Man, has been competing for five years in the Soca monarch and has only managed to placed second twice. He also placed third. His aim this year is to “stop getting seconds and thirds and come out as number one.”
Bones Roots, a forestry staffer, has been in the competition for four years. He won the best newcomer title in 2007. He also copped the third place spot in the competition that year. He placed fourth last year and plans to seal the deal this year because the crown, he says, “is me own.”
For Vanilla, it’s her fourth year in the competition and over the years she has placed fifth, fourth and second but this year she said it’s all about the crown. “I’m working for a double crown for 2010, both the Soca Monarch and Road March. When I do win I’ll be the first female to win both”.
Speaking for her label, she said Kross Kolor wants to walk away with the top three prizes at the Soca monarch competition, the first Junior Calypso Monarch and the Road March crown to move to the second gear in celebrating its 10th anniversary.
The Head Hunters crew is advising their fans to “Look out for our calendar of events for 2010.” Word is that Vanilla, Jumo and Bones Roots are working assiduously to complete a mash music video for release this weekend in addition to the one that Vanilla has produced that is making heavy rotations.
B52 has released his video. The group is managed by veteran music producer Burchmore Simon. The entire KKR crew will be on the road on Mash Day with the Banks DIH Mash band.
