– hundreds bid farewell to Roxanna Rigby
Hundreds of mourners turned out yesterday at Rosignol to bid farewell to the late national junior athlete, Roxanna Rigby, who was laid to rest at the Rosignol Cemetery following a Funeral Service at the Rosignol Methodist Church.
Scores of representatives from the Guyana Defence Force, Guyana Police Force, Schools, Athletic Association of Guyana, friends and family paid their final respects in what was a moving “thanksgiving service” for the national athlete.
“I never see so much people so. I never see so much people in my life,” an Aunt of Rigby told Kaieteur Sport yesterday, adding that the many tributes and Reverend E. Redmond’s sermon added to the touching atmosphere yesterday.
The body of the late Rigby was viewed at her home before it was moved to the playfield for a one-hour sports event. The Funeral Service reportedly commenced promptly after it was moved from the playfield following burial around 4pm.
The 18-year-old Rigby of 161 Public Road Rosignol Village, West Bank Berbice was one of three children for Avril and Ovid Rigby. Her other siblings included a younger brother, Oquana Rigby and an Antigua-based sister, Onika.
She was born on April 21, 1991 and last represented Guyana at the Inter-Guiana’s Games in Suriname last September as a member of the national junior volleyball team. She was a member of the Athletics Guiana Games’ team in 2008. Roxanna died enroute to the Georgetown Public Hospital from Forth Wellington Hospital in the vicinity of Number 28 Village, West Coast Berbice last Thursday evening. She had complained about feeling unwell the Tuesday before passing.
The promising athlete had developed spates of vomiting and diarrhoea before developing pains in her upper left leg and lower right foot. The post-mortem was done on Tuesday at New Amsterdam Hospital and the cause of death was unknown. Roxanna had dominated junior sprint events locally for three straight years at the Athletic Association of Guyana and Schools’ levels. She is the national junior 100 and 200 metres champion and 100m champ at the schools’ level.
