The inaugural A&S Import and General four-team twenty/20 softball knockout cricket competition will get underway this weekend at the Carifesta Sports Complex ground, Carifesta Avenue, and an entertaining event is anticipated.
The four teams that will be participating are Regal XI, West Demerara XI, Essequibo Coast XI and a Berbice Select XI. The championship side will collect $100,000 and a trophy, while the runners-up will take home $50,000 and a trophy.
Third-place will collect $5,000, while man-of-the-match in the final will receive a trophy. In addition to that, the best batsman and bowler of the two-day activity will also be the recipients of trophies.
The competition is being run under the auspices of the Guyana Softball League (GSL). The launching took place on Tuesday at the sponsor’s office at 69 Seaforth Street, Campbellville, in the building of popular business place, Regal Stationery and Computer Centre.
Organizer of the competition, Leonard Harprashad, in his remarks, thanked the sponsor for coming on board and promised a well-run competition, which will attract a number of top softball players from around the country.
He further mentioned that this competition will help to rejuvenate the wrist bowling of softball cricket. He said that the competition will be wrist bowling for a maximum of ten overs, while the other ten overs are optional, including the regular round-hand bowling.
Speaking on behalf of the donor, Lakeram Gopaul stated that A&S Import and General Store was very happy to be associated with the softball competition and guaranteed that they will make this an annual affair.
At the launching, the drawing for the teams was also done. Regal XI will come against West Demerara XI on Saturday at 13:00hrs, while on Sunday morning at 9:00hrs, Essequibo Coast XI will challenge Berbice Select XI in the other semi-final.
The winners will collide in the final at 14:00hrs. Preceding the final will be a 10/10 over-40 exhibition Masters clash between Regal Masters and Rangers Masters. The winner’s trophy for this game is being sponsored by West Indies batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan and family.
Other incentives for that contest are also up for grabs.
