Guyana’s Ambassador to Brussels, Patrick Gomes, has now been accredited as Guyana’s High Commissioner to Cyprus.
The President of the Republic of Cyprus Mr. Demetris Christofias, Monday received, at a formal ceremony at the Presidential Palace, the credentials of the High Commissioner of Guyana, with residence in Brussels, Patrick Gomes.
Gomes, in presenting his Letters of Credence, said that the occasion was a great one for the two countries “as we consolidate and deepen the long-standing bonds of friendship, mutual respect for human rights, the rule of law and democratic governance.”
Gomes said that Guyana is proud to have remained steadfast in its support of all the United Nations resolutions demanding respect of the territorial integrity for a united Cyprus.
In deepening the bonds of friendship and solidarity with the people and the Government of Cyprus, the High Commission said Guyana looks forward to a consistent and vigorous pursuit of a common position with member states of the Commonwealth at the forthcoming conference on Climate Change in Copenhagen.
He expressed gratitude of the Government of Guyana for the training scholarships in forestry management that the Government of Cyprus has offered. Gomes said Guyana is anxious to pursue a formal relationship for higher education, research and training in environmental sciences and forestry, given the renowned attainments of Cyprus in these areas.
Replying, the President of Cyrpus said the March visit of President Bharrat Jagdeo to the island constituted a landmark for the further development of the friendly ties between Cyprus and Guyana.
He said that as EU member, Cyprus stands ready to offer its support in strengthening Guyana’s relations with the EU.
The President of Cyprus assured Gomes that his efforts to develop multifaceted and mutually beneficial cooperation will meet the unfailing support of his government.
