School of the Nations will participate in next month’s Sir Garfield Sobers International school’s cricket competition in Barbados and they are keen to better their third place finish in last year’s competition.
According to team Manager Rhonda Joy Pearson, the local team, which is scheduled to depart Guyana on July 3, has intensified preparations and is confident of doing well in Barbados.
“Last year we finished third and lost just one of our eight matches.
Although the level of sponsorship we have got could have been better, the guys are all working hard and we are confident of success this year.
We are still accepting donations for our food and accommodations,” Pearson said.
The hard working teacher, who played a similar role a few years ago when St Rose’s High School played in the tournament, informed that the team practises on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
The players train on Mondays at GNIC and at the school’s Kingston location on the other two days.
It was also revealed that Liat has given the team a package rebate on their air tickets and the school, which also has a branch in Berbice, is embarking on several funding raising activities for the trip. A 14-man squad has been already selected and includes three players who represented Guyana last December in Trinidad in the regional Under-17 tournament, in wicketkeeper Dexter Solomon, Berbice batsman Jamali Odle and off-spinner Ricardo Devers.
Former Guyana Under-15 players Toralva Scipio, Kwame Cross, Jahron Byron and Kevin Fredericks are also in the side. GCC batsman Alex Romalho and Berbician Troy Ramjattan are also included
Those who are desirous of contributing to the team can make contact with Pearson on telephone numbers 6276118, 6904521, or at the School of the Nations on 226-5781.
