By Sean DeversNational under-19 left-hander 17-year-old Jeetendra Sookdeo stroked 15 fours in a magnificent 157 before returning to capture three cheap wickets to spur GCC to a commanding 191-run victory against GDF at Bourda on Saturday as the 2008 Demerara Cricket Board Hand-in-Hand second division 50-overs knock-out cricket competition commenced.
GCC reached 324-8 and then dismissed the Soldiers for 135 in the most one-side first round match which was reduced to a 45-over affair due to a late start.
Waslim Haslim (22) who added 69 with Sookdeo for the first wicket and wicketkeeper Yannick Grimes (70), who put on 122 for the second wicket with the elegant Sookdeo, offered support before Gavin Singh chipped in with 33 towards the end of the innings as Mark McAllister finished with 3-58 for GDF.
Keith Frazer took the fight to the home team and struck nine fours and three sixes in his 71 but got no assistance as Singh, who opened the bowling with his off-spin, captured 4-33 and Sookdeo took 3-3. At DCC, the home team, led by a fine all-round performance on Saturday from Guyana under-19 opener Trevon Griffith who made 43 and took 5-19, beat Police by 75 runs.
Leroy Primo (62), Coen Primo Ismond (38) and Guyana under-19 player Royston Alkins (28) were also among the runs as DCC reached 234 in 42.2 overs with D. Southwell and T. Tyrell taking three wickets each.
M. Persaud top scored with 65 in a losing effort for the Cops who fell for 159 in 31.1 overs as Griffith got support from Skipper Lyndon Lyght who took 3-49.
At DCC yesterday, National under-17 Skipper Dexter Solomon scored an even half century while Martin Rajmangal made 43 as GNIC squeezed past GYO by one wicket as Skipper Dyrick Koulin hit 81 and Guyana under-17 selectee Ricardo Devers grabbed 5-24 with his off-spin in a losing cause for GYO.
GYO made 190 with Alex Ramalho (24) and Vijay Gangaram (23) supporting Koulin with the bat as Travis Walton took 4-36 and Rawle Merell 2-38. Carlos Reid supported Devers with 2-41 as GNIC were made to fight hard for their victory once the solid Solomon was run out.
And Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport (MCYS) whipped Third Class by two wickets yesterday after reaching 131-8 replying to the opposition’s 127 all out.
Sherwin Vincent captured 4-33 with his left-arm spin in the Third Class innings and got support from Nakita Lawson who took 3-39.
Vincent then top scored with 27 for the Ministry team while Fenton Persaud (19) and Rhodri McAlmont (14) chipped in with vital runs to see their team home.
Defending Georgetown Hand-in-Hand champions Malteenoes Sports Club, who lost to Enterprise in the County final last year, will begin their City title defence against MYO on Saturday.
