Dennis Richards, called Junior, 19, was sitting on the verandah of his Enterprise Gardens home when he was called out by a group of friends.
A few minutes later, his girlfriend, Simone Trotman, collapsed at the sight of his battered body as it was brought home by a friend.
Richards was the victim of a brutal beating allegedly at the hands of the men who had called him from his home.
He succumbed at the Georgetown Public Hospital at around 04:00 hours yesterday.
Police, in a statement yesterday, said that they are investigating the circumstances surrounding Richards’s death. The man died while receiving medical attention.
The police said that his death followed an incident during which he was allegedly beaten about his body with pieces of wood by four men at Melanie, East Coast Demerara, at around 21:30 hours the previous night.
Speaking with this newspaper yesterday, a distraught Trotman, who hails from Port Kaituma, North West District, said that she and Richards had recently come to the city to spend some time.
The couple had been together for the past four months.
According to Trotman, she and Richards were sitting on the verandah on Wednesday night when he told her that someone was calling him.
“I asked him, I said, ‘Junior please don’t go on the road’. He said, ‘Babes, ah coming back just now’,” Trotman recalled.
She said that after Richards insisted that he was going with whoever was calling him, she walked away and he went out of the yard.
“That was the last time I saw him, until he came back with his skin covered with a whole lot of mud. He couldn’t speak or say anything.”
She explained that Richards was bleeding through his ears and mouth, as well as from several lacerations to his face.
Another relative of the dead man told this newspaper that, minutes after Richards left, one of his friends came to the house and informed them that he was lying in an abandoned house in Melanie Damishana, not far from his home. The relative said that he went to the house, where he found Richards lying motionless.
According to the relative, Richard was picked up and taken back to his home, from where he was rushed to the hospital.
None of the relatives could say if Richards had any problems with anyone. “This came as a shock to me. We were planning to get married later this year,” said his girlfriend.
No one in the area reported hearing any screams coming from the area where Richards was beaten. However, police, acting on information, arrested two men, who are assisting with investigations.
