The Demerara Harbour Bridge (DHB) will be undergoing the second phase of ‘Operation Transom’ on Sunday. The second phase of the project will see corrective maintenance being done on Retractor Span 9 of the bridge.
The repairs are scheduled to commence at 5:30 hours and last until 18:00 hours, to make the best use of the available natural light. During this time, vehicular traffic will be limited to cars, minibuses and vans that are no heavier than five tons.
Upon completion of the repair work, the weight limit will be set to 21 tons. This will last throughout the night until 5:30 hours the following day.
The DHB will then open to Marine Traffic at 5:30 hours.
The first phase of the repairs was confined to Retractor 8, which was along the southern end of the retractor span. The second phase will be concentrated on the northern end of the retractor span.
The management of the Demerara Harbour Bridge has explained that it is confident that the repairs will go according to schedule, unless there is some major, unforeseen problem like equipment failure. According to them, the second phase of ‘Operation Transom’ will involve less work than the first phase.
Due to this, the management of the DHB has expressed feelings that the work will go according to schedule and has expressed its gratitude to commuters for “the facilitating role they will play in ensuring that ‘Operation Transom’ is a success.”
