Less than one month after assuming the helm of the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) and committing to viable initiatives towards the sport’s advancement, President, James Bond, paid a visit to the Camp Street Prisons,
Georgetown, and met with officials to put the modalities in place for a Chess Club in the penal institution.
He was accompanied by Vice President of Development Frankie Farley, Committee Member, Anthony Drayton and Honorary Member, Errol Tiwari. Officer in Charge of the Georgetown Prisons, Senior Superintendent, Nickelon Elliot met the delegation and was delighted by the initiative.
He viewed the introduction of the sport in the Prisons as a great step towards the effective rehabilitation of inmates. The GCF will supply chess boards, clocks and books to start off the programme and will provide trainers to hone the skills of interested inmates.
Mr. Bond also assured that he will take a personal interest in the development of the inmates and his executives will render the necessary support. Mr. Elliot was delighted and proposed that (chess) officials extend the initiative to the other prisons; his proposal was immediately accepted.
Shortly before meeting with Mr. Elliot, the delegation engaged a group of ten inmates, under the guidance of Cadet Officer Hale, and enforced the ability of the game to mold individuals while containing unhealthy excesses.
Former Junior Champion, Anthony Drayton, outlined the benefits that can be derived from involvement in the sport while his views were supported by Tiwari in a similar presentation.
Meanwhile, 19 inmates recently participated in a tournament which gave the visiting delegation an idea of where to commence its tutoring exercise.
”This engagement is an excellent start and we look forward the staging of the schools’ programme shortly,” said Mr. Bond.
