A prisoner who is serving a 20-year prison term for killing a pensioner suffered a broken leg and other injuries on Sunday at the hands of other inmates who accused him of being an informant.
Sources identified the injured inmate as Clevon Romeo, or Clevon Romero, of Lima, Essequibo.
Kaieteur News understands that the Georgetown Prison inmates beat Romero with pieces of wood. He was admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital but was returned to the prison yesterday.
A prison official confirmed that the incident had been reported and an investigation is underway.
Clevon Romero and Edward Castello, both of Lima, Essequibo Coast, were charged with murdering 66-year-old Herman Ramnarine, a pensioner of Lima Sea Dam, Essequibo, on October 24, 2012. Ramnarine’s wife, Hemiwantie Ramnarine, found him in the couple’s bottom flat with his hands bound behind his back and a piece of cloth tied to his throat.
Cause of death was given as strangulation.
They were also charged with robbing the slain man’s wife, who sustained a severe beating at the hands of the bandits.
She was robbed of $250,000, a gold chain, three gold bangles, a pair of gold earrings and a wedding band.
In 2014, the two were sentenced to 20 years each by
Justice Franklin Holder, at the Suddie High Court.
