With three teams in the last four, the community of Linden has the numerical advantage and is therefore guaranteed at least one finalist, but East Coast Demerara’s Victoria Kings, the lone remaining team beside the Lindeners will want to spoil the
royal party.
They face Linden’s traditional powerhouse Topp XX in the feature clash of the double header toay in semi-final action of the GTT/Limacol Round Robin / Knockout Football Competition, at the Victoria Community Centre ground.
In the preceding semi-final, an all-Linden affair, Winners Connection square off against counterparts Milerock and even though whoever wins will ensure that at minimum the second prize goes to the community, the mere thought of bragging rights could produce a pulsating contest.
The early prognosis in the feature game is suggesting that it will be a rivetting contest and a high scoring affair, especially with the abundance of talent and experience that reside in both teams so fans could expect football of a high quality.
Topp XX because they’ve been able to remain unbeaten to date will start as favourites and this is due to their impregnable defence which has conceded only two goals in three matches, the best statistical record to date.
Apart from that imposing testimony, Topp XX has one of the best mixtures of experience and youth and this lethal combination has proven effective to date.
The veteran Travis Waterton has been performing at a high level and leads his team with four goals, while Oswald Benjamin has been a solid supporting cast.
Then there is the midfielf wizardry of former national player Collie Hercules, who still looks like the ‘old master’ in the centre, constsntly delivering some deadly passes, while also playing a significant supporting role in defence.
However, the hosts have players of quality as well and playing before their home crowd which is anticipated to be large is a significant advantage, a plus that they’ve usually exploited to their benefit.
Winston Pompey and Alden Lawrence have accounted for six of the eight goals they’ve score in their matches to date, sharing the spoils equally, and they will be aiming to continue in their rich vein of form.
However, they will need to tighten up defensively after allowing two more goals than Topp XX to date.
The opening game has all the hallmarks of being a gem despite Winners Connection outstanding record in the competition so far.
They’ve been the most lethal team, converting eleven goals from the three matches they’ve played and even though Milerock has steadily picked up momentum after a lacklustre start, they may find the going too tough to get past their high scoring opponents.
Their prolific talisman Marmarlaque Davidson leads the pack with six goals and his main support has been Keon Sears, who has two of his own and the two have been lively and deadly with their finishing.
Milerock, who had to play four times to reach this stage, are capable of springing an upset so Winners Connection will be mindful of this danger and treat them seriously.
The trio of Clarence Huggins, Jermain Grandison and Denzil Fordyce has taken on the responsibility of getting the goals for the team.
Huggins leads the pack with four goals, while Fordyce and Grandison have two apiece.
Up for grabs are $500,000 and the championship trophy for the winners of the tournament, while the runner-up, third and fourth placed finishers receive $250,000, $125,000 and $75,000 respectively.
Among the other sponsors on board are: National Sports Commission and Sterling Products.
Kick off time is 18:00 hrs.
