– Lloyd tell DCC national selectees
Chairman of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) senior selection panel Clive Lloyd yesterday urged the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) players who will be representing Guyana at the upcoming Regional youth tournaments, to be proactive and diligent throughout their journey.
Speaking at a ceremony held at the club’s pavilion yesterday, Lloyd told the players that their personal progress is vital to attain greater heights.
He spoke of a time when he was not fortunate to play youth cricket or even had coaches to guide him. He advised the players to make full use of their coach Garvin Nedd and others who have played senior or international cricket.
Lloyd who led the Region to victory in the 1975 and 1979 World Cup added that 12 players from one club being selected to represent their country at different levels is a “Testimony of good work” by the club.
He pointed out that education should not be neglected since it is essential for young cricketers to be able to assess game situations. Lloyd also painted instances of how players should not be outsmarted, stating that the West Indies have been losing matches over the years because teams have simply been better in assessing certain situations.
DCC President Alfred Mentore, noted that the club has been moving from strength to strength. “We have our cricketers playing at the first class level, the Barnwell’s, the Griffiths, the Paul Wintz, but the nursery is very important for us,” he added.
Coach Garvin Nedd, commended the players for their progress and urged them to play as a team while former players Jamaal Hinckson and West Indies ex Test player Travis Dowlin both encouraged the players to put their best foot forward.
The club presented bats, sneakers and gloves to the players’ compliments of Bish Pandy of P&P Insurance, Mentore of Lifetime Real Estate among others.
The 12 players that have been drafted into the various teams include Ashmead Nedd, Alphius Bookie, Sachin Singh, Qumar Turrington and Robin Williams (U15). Ashmead Nedd, Sagar Hetheramani, Timothy Mclmont and Raymond Perez (U17) and Kemo Paul, Sherfane Rutherford and Tevin Imlach (U19).
