At a simple ceremony held recently at the board’ office, the Hand in Hand
Insurance Company renewed its sponsorship of the second division forty overs cricket competition for teams in the West Berbice area. The insurance giant willingly came on board for the 2015 tournament as they did in the past. The defending champion is D’Edward Sports Club.
Speaking on behalf of the company, Zaleena Ramkishun, supervisor of the New Amsterdam Branch said that her company is always willing to give back to the communities in which they operate. She said that her company is pleased to partner with the board to keep people constructively occupied and live a healthy lifestyle. She said that Hand in Hand Insurance Company is impressed with the media coverage given over the years. She added that they are also impressed with the work of the BCB and wish them well in the future.
Speaking on behalf of the board, the president Anil Beharry thanked the insurance company for coming on board once more and said that the tournament was well received over the years and was conducted in a very professional manner. He thanked Carl Moore and his Competitions Committee for doing an excellent job. He said that the board is disappointed that the West Berbice Cricket Association is unable to secure sponsorship for cricket for teams in the area and as a result, the BCB has no choice but to intervene and make sure the game is kept alive. He said that the association and other cricketing bodies in the country should take a page out of the book of the Upper Corentyne Cricket Association which was recently resuscitated under the chairmanship of Dennis D’Andrade and is able to secure sponsorship for all competitions for the teams in the area.
Competitions Committee chairman and long serving member, Carl Moore, said that although his work load has increased, he is happy to know that the lovely game of cricket can be played across the length and breadth of the ancient county. He said from these competitions, new talents are unearthed. He added that there are many untouched talent in the villages and urged first division clubs to do talent spotting. He said that these kinds of cricket also bring back the interest to the kids as many fathers are participating and they bring along the entire family in a picnic type atmosphere. He urged clubs to send in the scores early so that proper coverage can be given in the media.
BCB secretary Angela Haniff also thanked the insurance provider for their continued confidence in the board and urged the players to maintain discipline at all times.
