It will take a huge act of shameful writing for any historian to elevate the PPP as a great historical party after its unspeakable record of tyranny in government the past twenty-two years. There is absolute certainty about it – the recording of history will put the PPP Government in the most sordid light.
A denial of the PPP descent into unhistorical abomination can only come from persons who are versatile in propaganda stuff, who are beneficiaries of the PPP venalities over the long years. Early last year, I wrote a review of a history book authored by a very high official in the PPP government, though that person is not in the PPP leadership. The next day I scrapped the article. The section on the sixties was just plain, dishonest writing.
Why should I alert people to the fiction PPP supporters write about Guyanese history? Why should I do PR work for the PPP? Today, the book lies in obscurity and that is where it belongs.
As the days wear on in 2015 until the expected election date, the emanations from the PPP will be saccharine, flowery and poetic about the great deeds of the PPP since it was born 65 years ago. But in a country with a population whose demographics put the younger generation at over sixty five percent, those self-aggrandizements will hardly help the PPP to convert young Guyanese.
I was invited last week by AFC activists to address the folks of Providence/Peter’s Hall on the Government’s ongoing denial of compensation over an incompetently repaired koker door that inundated the two villages resulting in personal losses of over two hundred million last year. The Government is offering them a mere eleven million dollars. These villagers have met the devil in person, the devil who is now 65 years of age.
While the meeting was in progress, two young East Indian males on a motor-cycle drove up next to me to speak to one of their friends; I engaged them. And the PPP’s Achilles’ heel was exposed.
A twenty-eight-year-old Guyanese only knows one government, the PPP. The two young men I spoke to were not interested in politics because for them there was nothing the Government has done for them.
After twenty years in power, the 65-year-old “grand” party of Guyana cannot sell its history, generosity and nationalism to a young Guyanese population. And the reason it cannot be so, is because it never had those things in the first place.
The illusion that it had those values appeared real to the post-70 generation because Forbes Burnham could not control his authoritarian instincts. Cheddi Jagan became Cheddi Jagan because Forbes Burnham could not remain as Forbes Burnham and had to prove to Guyana that he, Burnham, was too great to be an ordinary democratic leader.
This illusion is now dissolved inside the castle of sand that the PPP built since it came to power in 1992.
Today historians and social scientists in Guyana and the region frown upon the tall story of the bad days of the PNC in power.
The Walter Rodney Commission (I will have more to say about the role of Mrs. Patricia Rodney) is the deus ex machina of the PPP to preserve what never existed.
The Commission has become a failure with judges whose bias are openly displayed and governmental witnesses whose testimony amounts to a circus.
Robert Gates has single-handedly reduced the Commission to a farce. Shaun Samaroo’s reporting on the Commission’s hearings for the Chronicle; was like Gates’s testimony, a testimony to the moral bankruptcy of the 65-year-old “grand” party of Guyana.
But if you want to see how a farce morphs into a circus just watch the general-secretary of the “grand” only party performs at his weekly press conferences.
Just watch the commissar for information, Charles Ramson, when he addresses the media. Just watch the President himself reason about politics in Guyana, and what is laid bare is the illusion that the grand party made real when it was in opposition – that it had history, generosity and nationalism.
The PPP’s twenty-two years in power is marked by murder, criminal behaviour, sexual deviancy, unbelievable levels of corruption, morbid incestuousness, ideological racism (of which Mr. Jagdeo is the chief exponent), party paramountcy, savage, bestial vindictiveness, incredible corruption and daily doses of Philistine behaviour that borders on the semi-civilized.
History will judge the PPP in all the ways that are harsher than any past government in Guyana even during colonial times.
The “grand” old party is 65 years old and is wearing the Emperor’s New Clothes.
It is disgusting that our teachers have to protest in the streets for a…
