Two Bangladesh nationals were remanded to prison after they appeared before Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court to face forgery charges.
It is alleged that on November 24, 31-year-old Noor Nabi Babloo at the Central Immigration and Passport Office, with the intent to defraud, conspired with person(s) unknown and presented a forged Identification Card (ID) to an Immigration Officer in favour of Emily Babloo #243567432 to say the same was granted by the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM).
It was further alleged that Babloo between October 4 and November 24, at Georgetown, with intent to defraud, conspired with person(s) unknown to forge the said ID card.
It is alleged that between the same period, at Georgetown, with intent to defraud, 31-year-old Mohammed Hussain conspired with person(s) unknown to forge a Guyana ID card 243547329 in favour of Michael Singh, to say the same was granted to him by GECOM.
It was further alleged that Hussain on November 24, at the Central Immigration and Passport Office, with the intent to defraud, he uttered to an Immigration Officer same to be his.
Representing the duo was Attorney at Law Paul Fung-a-Fat who told the court that both men work at a Variety Store on Regent Street and have been living in Guyana for the past two years at Lot 17A Barclay Street, Goed Fortuin, West Bank Demerara.
Fung-a-Fat made an application for “high” bail and said that the men have applied at the Ministry of Home Affairs for work permits and are waiting for processing to be completed. The lawyer stated that his clients are trying to find a better life in Guyana and would be willing to lodge their passports and report to the authorities everyday while they wait.
Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones, however, objected to bail and stated that the accused are immediate flight risks since they are not Guyanese nationals. Jones stated that they have failed to provide a proper place of work as there are many stores on Regent Street. The Prosecution told the court that “They’re trying to find a better life, but they forged an ID card.”
Magistrate McLennan highlighted that the court must know the immigration status of the Bangladesh nationals and denied bail. The men were remanded to prison and will make their next court appearance on Friday.
