The police have launched a manhunt for escapee Chetram Singh, 26, a deportee of Betsy Ground, East Canje, Berbice. The man on Wednesday disappeared from the Reliance Police Station during the court session. This is the second time that the man has made a daring escape from the precincts of the Reliance Police Station.
Singh had previously escaped from the station lock ups on March 16 while in custody on a charge of simple larceny. He had allegedly stolen an electrical generator.
The convict had allegedly broken out of the locks up on that occasion, by hitting out a board.
However investigators after examining the space that Singh had allegedly passed through disbelieved that story.
Singh had also upon his recapture, told investigators that he had paid two ranks on duty to release him and that $35,000 was his getaway price. He said that the breakout was a concoction.
The two police who were in charge of the station at the time are presently under open arrest.
Female Special Constable Denita Vandenberg of Reliance has since been charged with allowing Singh to escape, while her colleague, a Neighbourhood Policeman, was not charged.
Singh was recaptured after the police received intelligence and surrounded a house in which he was hiding .
Singh had allegedly gone on a robbery spree during his brief period of freedom.
Information on this latest escape is sketchy and no one seemed to know exactly when the prisoner escaped.
Kaieteur News learnt that the man was taken to the Reliance Magistrate’s Court to face charges on his previous misdemeanours.
He had already appeared before the magistrate and was being taken back to the station when somehow he mysteriously vanished. It was learnt also that he was being guarded by a Neighbourhood Policeman.
