Kaieteur News – Three vendors from Stabroek Market, Georgetown, on Wednesday made their first court appearance to answer to separate charges of assault and wounding, allegedly committed on each other.
The defendants appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Twenty-year-old Desiree Green, of Pike Street, Sophia, Georgetown, was accused of unlawfully and maliciously damaging a spectacle valued at $68,000, property of 42-year-old Onika Halley, of Lot 53 Annandale, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
Meanwhile, Halley faced a separate charge for unlawfully assaulting Green while 25-year-old Shawn Montague of 527 Mango Lane, East Ruimveldt, Georgetown, was charged for unlawfully wounding Halley.
Green pleaded guilty with explanation, while Halley and Montague pleaded not guilty.
The charges stemmed from a dispute among the defendants which occurred on May 10, 2024 while in the Stabroek Market area. It was disclosed that a scuffle ensued between Halley and Green over the spectacles, during which Montague intervened and allegedly inflicted a stab wound to Halley’s neck.
Attorney-at-law Jevon Cox, who represented Halley, told the court that his client is not a flight risk. Green and Montague did not have legal representation.
The police prosecutor made no objection to bail being granted to the defendants but requested that they be placed on a keep-the-peace bond.
Acting Chief Magistrate Isaacs-Marcus granted bail to the defendants. Montague was placed on $30,000, Green on $20,000 and Halley on $10,000. The magistrate also cautioned the defendants.
The defendants are scheduled to make their next court appearance on June 26, 2024.
