Kaieteur News – Vickey Balgobin, a 28-year-old resident of Lot 258 Area G De Willem Village, West Coast Demerara (WCD), appeared at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court last week to answer three charges in relation to a hit and run accident that occurred along the Blankenburg Public Road, WCD on September 3.
That accident left 42-year-old Azaad Khan, a resident of Lot ‘S’ Blankenburg, dead.
According to police, Balgobin appeared before Magistrate Zamilla Ali-Seepaul to answer the charges of causing death by dangerous driving, failure to stop after an accident, and failure to render assistance to an injured person.
Balgobin, police stated, pleaded not guilty to the causing death charge and pleaded guilty to the two remaining charges where he was fined $40,000 or 12 weeks imprisonment each. Balgobin, who was remanded to prison, is expected to return to court on October 26, 2022.
It was reported that around 19:25hrs on September 3, last, a black Toyota Allion motorcar was driving at a fast rate west along the southern side of the road when it struck Khan who was crossing the public road in the vicinity of the Blankenburg Nursery School.
The aftermath of the crash was described as horrific. The impact of the crash flung Khan into the air and he landed a short distance away on the paved road. Part of his leg was found in a nearby yard. A motionless Khan was reportedly picked up my members of the Community Policing Group (CPG) and rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
Balgobin, who reportedly fled the scene, was captured the following day and admitted to police that he was indeed the driver and told them that he had fled the scene because he had “panicked”.
An investigation was launched and he was charged subsequently.
