Kaieteur News – The Guyana Prison Service (GPS) last month donated school bags and other supplies to the children of inmates as they prepare to return to school following the August holiday.
Mrs. Marielle Bristol-Grant, the Officer-in-Charge, Prisoners Welfare and Correction, stated that the Welfare and Corrections Department coordinated the activity as part of the Family Reconciliation Programme of the GPS.
According to Bristol-Grant, the timing could not have been more perfect, stating that each individual item given to recipients was carefully planned on how beneficial they each would be to the child receiving them. Mrs. Bristol-Grant emphasized that the inmates presenting the package to their children was the most important to have them feel as though they were a part of the process, and to positively uplift and impact the child being given the items.
For his part, Director of Prison Service (Ag), Nicklon Elliot, stated that the objective of the programme is to ensure that every child is provided with the basic amenities to attend school once it reopens. “I think it helps their self-esteem, despite their circumstances. We at the GPS recognise the importance of education. We all know that the greatest asset that could be given to a child is education,” Elliot said. To this end, the Prison Director expressed optimism that the initiative will motivate the students to get excited about returning to school and face-to-face teaching. Kaieteur News understands that the initiative proved highly beneficial to both parties involved and was highly appreciated by both the inmates and their families.
