Kaieteur News- Recently renovated Region One, North-West vessels, the MV Kimbia and the MV Barima, are currently docked for emergency repairs.
According to the Ministry of Public Works and the Transport & Harbours Department (TH&D), the MV Kimbia has developed a hole in its bow and is currently in dry dock at the Guyana National Industrial Corporation (GNIC). The ministry is hoping that the necessary repairs to this vessel will completed soon and it will be up and running before the end of January.
Concerning the MV Barima, TH&D and the Public Works Ministry stated that it experienced an engine failure to its port eng
ine. The ministry is currently unsure as to when this vessel will be operational again. Nevertheless, it promised that together with TH&D and the private sector, all efforts are being made to have the service up and running as soon as possible.
The MV Kimbia, which normally travels from Georgetown to Mabaruma, was built in 1980 and was recommissioned in April 2019 by the former Coalition led administration after a $488M renovation.
MV Barima, which travels from Georgetown to Port Kaituma, was renovated in 2017 to the tune of $150M. According to residents of Region One, the vessels have been inoperational for some nine days now. Many are affected, not only passengers or residents, but also shop owners who use the vessels to transport basic goods to both Mabaruma and Port Kaituma.
Some shop owners who spoke with this media house have already hinted that if the service is not operational soon, then they will have to raise the prices for their goods since it costs more to transport them, via plane.
