Dear Editor,
The recent controversy about the Berbice River Bridge is a mind boggling phenomenon to all our Guyanese people.
Many are afraid now that this Bridge will cut short their livelihood and it can create a big economic disaster from Berbice to Georgetown. Since the inception of this bridge, I smelled a RAT when I looked at the exorbitant price to cross when compared to the Demerara Harbour Bridge price.
I was fully convinced that this Bridge will create a very big problem for us in the future.
There is an old saying, ‘’You cannot forsake the old for the new’’. That is exactly what happened here. They removed the big boats and pontoons until the current administration implemented the water taxis or speedboats because of the high cost for poor citizens to cross this bridge.
Former President Jagdeo who thinks he is the brain of this nation was the man who signed contracts for this bridge. He is well aware of the future of this bridge toll increase but remained silent. Now he throws the blame on this administration.
All the mess he has created he now throws it on this government that is only three years in power. And the sugar estates fiasco is no different and all because of his bad political manoeuvres. Are we to believe that Jagdeo has no knowledge of this Bridge Contract and was he not aware that the cost to cross this bridge was too high for the ordinary man?
The facts remain that this bridge toll will rise on the day of local government elections tells me clearly that this bridge increase is political and these politicians are playing with the lives of poor people. These politicians can no longer play the blame game on people’s lives in this nation all because of votes and racial politics.
The fundamental problem in this country is a racial problem that is dividing our people since the Jagan and Burnham era and political faction.
We cannot allow old archaic politics and dead leaders to dictate a contemporary Guyana. I don’t even think that Burnham or Jagan would have implemented and supported this bridge toll or even built such a bridge with a spurious- obscure contract to kill the poor working class of people.
As of today, I read with interest that these unscrupulous bridge administrators will go ahead to implement their 365% toll increase on this bridge as of November 12, 2018, the same day Local Government Elections are Held.
May I say that this is a next political gimmick to stifle and slow down progress in the economy.
This Government can now do the Honourable thing; SCRAP THIS BERBICE BRIDGE and put back the big boats and pontoons in the river to ease the burden of the Guyanese People. Private boat owners can also put back their speedboats and pontoons and we can forget this Berbice Bridge once and for all.
Jagdeo and his contemporaries will afford to cross the bridge themselves to remove the debt burden on our Guyanese People. We must stop play political blame game and put our people before our own interest to gain political power. I call on President Granger to scrap the Berbice River Bridge.
Regards,
Rev. Gideon Cecil
