The Guyana Fire Service saved the day with their quick response to a fire on the fourth floor of the Crown Mining Supplies building on North Road in Georgetown, yesterday afternoon. The fire was brought under control without any significant damage
Divisional Officer of Operations for the Guyana Fire Service, Gregory Wickham, told this publication that “we received a report of a fire at lot 9 North Road, Georgetown, and immediately dispatched two fire tenders, one from the Central Fire Station at Stabroek and another from Alberttown Fire Station. As we arrived and mounted the building, we realized the fire was on the fourth floor – that’s the very top of the building – an area where they had a generator, so we saw some burning up there”.
When questioned about the difficulty the Fire Service faced in getting the fire under control, Mr Wickham said that when they arrived on the scene the doors were already open, which made access very easy, and also allowed for the firefighters to ensure that the damage was minimal. He did explain that only after the investigation is complete, will the Fire Service be able to say what exactly caused the fire and the full extent of the damage.
Witnesses claim to have seen black smoke coming from the top of the building around 16:30 hrs, after which calls were made to the emergency services and the owners of the business.
The occupants of an adjacent property which once housed the “Blue Wave Villa” a property owned by International Guyanese superstar, Eddy Grant, had already started making preparations to move to safety if the fire had not been brought under control.
When the Divisional Fire Officer was questioned about fire safety regulations, he said that from what he had observed, the owners of the building have conformed to all the required standards.
