Investigators are probing the alleged assault of a businessman of Port Mourant, Corentyne, Berbice by ranks in ‘B’ Division. Kaieteur News was told that three ranks spoke with the victim yesterday and statements were taken from him.
Jameel Hakim, 19, of Ankerville Port Mourant, Corentyne said that he was arrested at his home and transported to the Whim Police Station, where ranks allegedly brutalized him.
He stated that no reason was given by the police for his arrest but while at the station, he was reportedly put to kneel on the floor and was trashed with an electric wire. He was also allegedly kicked about his body.
Hakim further stated that the ranks then questioned him about a gold chain and while they were questioning him, they dunked his head in a bucket of water. He stated that the police continued to do it after he denied knowing about the gold chain and shortly after pepper was placed in his mouth which was taped shut.
According to him, after the assault, he was moved to the Reliance Lock-ups and subsequently hauled before the court and charged with larceny. He was released on his own recognizance.
