Thirty-year old contractor, Nameshwar Maniram of Corentyne, Berbice appeared yesterday before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrate Court for being involved in fraudulent activities.
It is alleged that between July 17 and July 20, last, Maniram had an intent to defraud by conspiring with person or persons to forge one certificate of adoption in his favour.
Maniram pleaded not guilty to the charge, stating that he in 2003, he was legally adopted but couldn’t get his document.
He said he was also unaware that his documents were forged.
The prosecutor indicated the defendant wanted to gain US citizenship and paid someone $35,000 to gain documents that can be used to obtain a visa at the Embassy. He said that Maniram applied for an interview at the Embassy.
While interviewing him, the Embassy staff realised that the documents that were given to them were forged. They contacted the police station and the defendant was arrested and later charged. The prosecutor had no objection to bail being granted to the defendant but asked that conditions be attached to the bail.
The father of a five-month-old child told the court that this was his first offence and he is asking for leniency.
The magistrate, after listening to the defendant’s submission granted his bail of $100,000; that he lodges his passport at the court and to report every Friday at Springlands Police Station until the completion of the trial.
