The trial of a minibus driver who was previously charged with causing the death of a 42-year-old pedal cyclist, continued yesterday before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Jamal John, of 53 Joseph Pollydore Street, Lodge, denied the charge which alleged that on December 18, last, at Vlissengen Road, Georgetown, he drove minibus, BTT 8476, in a manner dangerous to the public, causing the death of Desmond Grandsoult.
It was reported that after the accident, John escaped from the scene and police issued a wanted bulletin for his arrest.
He was arrested two months ago and placed before a City Magistrate where the charge was read to him. He is currently on remand for the offence.
Yesterday, Police Constable Richards told the Court that he is stationed at Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and attached to the Crime Lab as a photographer.
Richards told the Court that on December 18, last, he was on duty when he received certain information, and as a result he uplifted a camera and proceeded to Kitty Police Station.
The witness added that on arrival at the station, he was showed a white bus and a pedal cycle. He added that he then took his camera and shot multiple photographic exposures of the bus and bike. Magistrate Latchman then suspended the witness evidence until June 15.
According to reports, John was previously charged and fined for dangerous driving after being found guilty of the offence.
On December 18, last, John who was the driver of minibus BTT 8476 was proceeding south along Vlissengen Road at a fast rate while the pedal cyclist (Grandsoult) was proceeding in the same direction, in front of the minibus.
Grandsoult then attempted to cross the road from east to west when the accident occurred.
The police in a statement said that the left front of the minibus collided with the rear of the pedal cycle, which resulted in Grandsoult falling on the roadway, causing the minibus to run over his body. The driver then swerved into the trench.
Grandsoult was picked up in an unconscious condition and taken to the GPHC where he was admitted to the High Dependency Unit at the hospital where he eventually succumbed to his injuries.
